Confidence is the key in home tuition

December 2010

Celia Jarvis is 14 years old and has just started Year 10 at her school in Wolverhampton. Thanks to her hard work and commitment to The Student Support Centre’s ‘simply’ maths tuition and English tuition programmes, Celia is starting off the final school years with more confidence than ever.

Celia has been on the ‘simply’ maths tuition and English tuition programmes for just over eighteen months now. Whilst Celia has always been bright and has shown promise at school, her parents felt that it would be a great idea for her to have a home-based tuition system that would run alongside and complement her school learning, especially in GCSE maths and GCSE English. Celia’s father, Paul, says that ‘Since Celia started on the programmes her confidence has rocketed. The improvement has shown through in both her reports and at parents’ evenings. We are all really pleased with her progress.’

Preparing for GCSEs is often a difficult time for both children and parents, and many parents turn to private tuition to help their children prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. The Student Support Centre offers a long-term and cost effective home-based tuition learning system, allowing students to work through the subjects at their own pace and in the comfort and privacy of their own home. The programmes are designed by educational experts and can be used to ‘fill in any gaps’ left behind in previous years, which is ideal for students who have fallen behind in crucial subjects like GCSE maths and English. Celia’s use of the ‘simply’ programmes over the last eighteen months has paid off as her predicted grades are already very good and Mr Jarvis is confident that she’ll achieve them: ‘If Celia is struggling with any elements of her school work then she can refer to her ‘simply’ materials and work through until she is sure she understands.’

He goes on to add that, ‘it can sometimes prove difficult to motivate children to work, but Celia actually enjoys working her way through the programmes. I think the structure works really well – Celia has to get 90% of each module correct before she can move on to the next one. In this way, she can be sure that she’s consolidated her knowledge before attempting the next unit. She finds it rewarding as she can clearly see how much progress she is making, which boosts her confidence even more.’

‘I would recommend The Student Support Centre’s maths tuition and English tuition programmes to anyone. The materials are invaluable for providing support and building confidence’

About The Student Support Centre:

The Student Support Centre opened its doors in 1991 and has since become the largest provider of home-based tuition programmes with 9 regional offices across the UK.

Our ‘simply’ programmes provide home-based tuition and support for children aged between 4 and 17 and may be a more cost effective alternative to private tutors for learning maths, English and reading. They have been designed to mirror the way in which children are taught in schools based on the National Curriculum requirements and use the teaching methods currently recommended for use in schools.
